Tips by Nic December 2009

Hello – it seems as if this time of the year I’m always writing about how to stay healthy during the Holidays. Well, the Holidays are all about tradition, so if the formula is working, then let’s stick to it. Here are my Holiday Tips for 2009:

There are some definite things people can do to stay fit during this time. Some things are easier than others.

  • Eat healthy amounts. Don’t overeat. I know it’s hard when that stuffing taste so good. If there’s something you want to eat that isn’t in your regular eating plan, then try it - In moderation.
  • Stay away from sugar. Now I know this is the hardest one of all. Go ahead and have a piece of pie, but not the whole pie. Again, moderation is key. If not, stay away altogether.
  • Don’t drink too much alcohol. I used to love Eggnog with Brandy in it. Talk about a sugar overload! Moderate again. And don’t drink & drive.
  • Exercise daily. You heard correctly. When you get up in the morning do a little exercise. If you need to moderate this as well then do so, just do it!
  • If you’re traveling, try stretching. Take breaks.

Extra Tips: I know some people get a little Blue around the Holidays. There are a few other things you can do about this as well.

  • Listen to music that makes you smile. For me, it’s not Christmas without Elvis Presley. For others it may be the Carpenters. Even my Jewish friends love to listen to Barbra Streisand’s Christmas album! Whatever it is, enjoy.
  • Spend time helping others. Feed the homeless. If you are the homeless (you’re probably not reading this) or have a family member or friend on the streets for whatever reason, take them a cup of coffee, a blanket, a meal.
  • Listen to a child’s laughter. A child’s laughter is pure JOY.

Thank you again for all your support. Remember to check with your physician or nutritionist prior to starting any exercise or food program.
See you next year!
