Hello -

 

As much as I love the Desert, I will be headed to the Beach as much as possible this summer.

Load my bike on the back of my car, pack sun-tan lotion with my bathing suit - as well as running shoes - and I'm off. Only a couple of hours away and you can stay outside all day.

Read on to see what else I'll be doing at the Beach this summer.

Get Wet

 

Swimming for Health & Strength

Anyone who knows me knows I'm not much for exercising in the pool myself. There are too many 'dry' sports I love to do. However, for those of you who would rather be in the pool, there are some advantages to this type of exercise.

Since most of America has a tendency to roll their shoulders forward, resulting in weak back muscles. Swimming is a natural way to strengthen these muscles. If your current lifestyle has you sitting for much of the clean pool day, your back is probably pretty sore by the end of the day. Start swimming, increasing the time you move in the water a little bit at a time, and I guarantee there will be a reduction in your back pain.

Advantages to swimming:

  • Because of the constant movement of the whole body, swimming can actually burn more calories than running.
  • Increases cardiorespiratory endurance
  • Is easier on your joints - especially hips & knees.
  • You don't need any equipment - just yourself.
  • Keeps you cool in the summer!

Sometimes it's easier to workout with others, in or out of the pool, so this is a great way for people to get to know each other, while supporting each other in a healthy lifestyle.

ON THE BEACH

There's nothing like the smell of the ocean's salt air. The sound of the waves crashing against itself. The sound of children playing on the sand. Or a baby's first steps into the ocean.  The view from a parachute looking down on the waves of people facing the water.

 

 

Parasailingparasail

 

Parasailing, also known as parascending, is a recreational activity where a person is towed behind a vehicle (usually a boat) while attached to a specially designed parachute, known as a parasail. The boat then drives off, carrying the individual into the air. If the boat is powerful enough, two or three people can parasail behind it at the same time.

Surfing

 

Yes, surfing is still a sport; and still fun.

The term 'surfing' is used for a surface water sport in which the person surfing is carried along the face of a breaking ocean wave (the "surf") standing on a board. (Hopefully they stay standing) . Bodyboarding, is when an individual rides a wave, but does not stand up on the board, and only partly raises his upper body from the board. 

Yeah, whatever. Count me in.

Kayaking

 

Surfing's not the only game at the beach. Ocean kayaking is the hot new sport that everyone wants to try.  You can set out for a day trip, an hour, a whole weekend for an  easy kayaking adventure along the coastline. Take a lesson or two, go with a friend, or by yourself, and have some fun.  I plan to.

The real question is, which beach are we going to? Carlsbad State Beach? Laguna? Ventura - muscle Beach? Guess what? I plan on hitting them all....And there's more! Bicycling,on the beach running - on & off the beach - tanning, people watching, fishing off the Santa Monica pier if one is inclined. There are options. And I plan to do them all. Uh, ok, maybe not the fishing part. But everything else. Who knows?

 I might have so much fun, I may not come back!
