I know I’ve given tips in the past on Healthy Food Choices - see July 2008 tips. I’d like to expand on that a bit more now. Some of the information below will be provided by Life Script of Healthy Advantages via internet.
As you know I don’t subscribe to the ‘one-size’ fits all. You are responsible for what you put in your body, and what you don’t. What I provide are tips from various sources. The following may seem obvious, but here we go with ‘The 10 Worst Foods You Could Possibly Consume’.
- Frankfurters - Hot Dogs - Stay away from these Dogs.
- Cheese from a Can - a heart attack waiting to happen.
- Potato Chips or French Fries - try some rice chips or organic blue chips if you must.
- Sweets - doughnuts, white sugar - krispy kremes are the worst!!
- Sugared jams & jellies - try some naturally sweetened organic jams or make them yourself!
- Cool Whip - This is just whipped sugar - find another use for it.
- Pasta drenched with butter, cream and Parmesan cheese - Any one of these items will clog your arteries, imagine what all of them at once is doing?
- Sausage or other Greasy Breakfast meat - (Life Script suggests you try chicken or turkey sausage, but I say stay from them all).
- Fried Chicken or Fried Wonton or Fried anything - need I say more? Try grilled skinless chicken breasts.
- White Bread - it may be American, but America is now leading the world in obesity. This is not a statistic any of us should be proud of.
There are all kinds of information that is available on the internet. Don’t just read one. Don’t just read mine. Find out for yourself. Besides my tips you can look for information on the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, any of the other Associations, which doesn’t necessarily make them ‘right’, but at least you’re taking responsibility and investigating for yourself.
There’s Jillian Michaels newsletter, which I get every day. (You think I send out a lot. Although I’m pretty sure Jillian isn’t doing her own). Healthy Advantage. Not to mention the various magazines you can view. Health & Fitness. Women’s/Men’s Health. Just to name a few. Because I like to focus on the positive I want to end this month’s tips with what you can eat instead of what you can’t.
Fruits and Vegetables are always good - Diabetics want to be careful about how much fruit they consume.
Salads - without the creamy dressings. Try a Tahini dressing.
Soups - not the creamy, clammy ones. Clear broth or make a soup yourself. Go to my Nutrition window on the menu and select Basic Food Plan.
Beans and Legumes - that’s black, kidney or white beans, not refried beans. This is a great source of protein.
Nuts - raw, organic not ‘smoked’ or ‘barbecued’. Almonds, walnuts, cashews. Don’t worry about the fat content! This is ‘good’ fat and your body needs it.
Fish - not shelled like shrimp or lobster - canned tuna in water is another source of protein.
Edamie - a great snack in between meals.
Baked or grilled chicken or turkey - a couple of servings a month. Stay away from red meat. If this is impossible for you, then make an allowance for once a month, but no more.
Sunflower or Pumpkin seeds are also good for you - again raw and organic.
Fresh is Best! No ‘canned’ vegetables if it can be helped. Most canned items carry an alarming amount of cholesterol.
So there it is folks. Enjoy! Food does not have to be boring. If you have any questions you can always call me directly at 760.272.4429. Again consult a physician or nutritionist before starting an exercise or eating plan.
